Water damage on a chimney is usually invisible until it isn't, working through hairline cracks in the crown or mortar for years before you see spalling brick or staining inside the house. I apply a breathable water-repellent sealant to the masonry and fix the cracks and joints that are letting water in in the first place.
On older brick and limestone chimneys this takes some care, since you want the wall to still breathe once it's sealed, not trap moisture in. Where the crown or flashing itself is the problem, I repair or rebuild that too rather than just sealing over it.

Outstanding in every way! Drew worked with us to select the right wood stove, fresh air intake, blower, chimney liner and cap for us. On installation day, he and his crew went above and beyond to carefully removed bricks from the back of the firebox and to core drill through the remaining wyths and limestone facade for a fresh air intake. They fully sleeved the chimney, custom fit a chimney cap, ran power for a blower to an outlet in the crawlspace, and insulated the lower chimney, all while working in almost impossibly tight conditions and taking great care for our 100+ year old house. This kind of attention to detail is rare these days! It really just doesn't get better than DeltA Chimney Sweep!
