I get called out for jobs across a wide range, from a straightforward annual sweep to bringing a fireplace back into use after ten years or more sitting dormant. Whatever the job, the starting point is the same: work out exactly what's there before deciding what to do about it, rather than guessing at what a job needs from the doorstep.

A lot of what I do happens alongside other building work, extensions, renovations, new flooring, the kind of jobs where a stove installation is one part of something bigger. I fit in around that, and around the fact that most of the homes I'm working in are lived in day to day, with children and pets around who don't stop just because there's a chimney job on.

I'd rather tell someone a chimney doesn't need relining than sell them work it doesn't need, and I'd rather point out a problem before it becomes an expensive one than leave it for someone else to find. That approach is what keeps people coming back, and recommending me to family and friends when their own stove or fireplace needs sorting.
