I start by walking the rooms with you so you can point out the areas that bother you most, traffic lanes, spills, anything that's been sat on for a while. Furniture gets moved where it needs to, and I pre-treat the worst spots before running the extraction machine over the whole carpet.
The bio-degradable solutions I use pull dirt and residue out of the fibers rather than just masking it, so carpets don't re-soil as fast afterward. I check my work before I pack up, and if something didn't come out the way you expected, I'll go back over it right then.
